When cooking with pie-irons we found that pre-heating the irons gave faster and more even cooking results. It also seemed to give a more toasting / browning effect. We simply laid our pie-irons on a fire for five minutes before filing with the ingredients. Watch for full review and pizza recipe coming soon.
In a pinch, if you are short on ice for your cooler, a gallon ziplock bag packed with (not yellow) snow can get you through. We were able to keep our food cold for a six-hour road trip using this method, even with just a basic cooler.
