Whiskey Park Zero Degrees Sleeping Bag by Big Agnus

Environment, Conditions, Duration of Testing

  • Three nights used indoors, 45 degrees – 70 degrees Fahrenheit
  • One night outdoors in three season tent, 0 degrees Fahrenheit with -25 degree windchill

Testing Summary

We tested this bag right up to it’s rated “zero” temperature rating. We may even have crossed that “0” mark in the middle of the night but we slept well enough not to notice. We did not use the bag with it’s whole sleep system as recommended by Big Agnus since we wanted to see how the bag would perform on it’s own rather than with extra padding or liners. (Besides, what fun is it following the instructions/ recommendations!) We also tested it indoors at multiple temperatures to see how it would perform being used in a cabin or in warmer environments.  For New Years weekend, we started indoors at a cool 45 degrees and ended at a balmy 70 degrees Fahrenheit. We will tell you that as advertised at 45 degrees, this bag beats any comfy bed at home. It is so roomy with extra material to wrap around you, one will never want to get out of it in the morning to make the coffee. The next day we packed the bags up in the stuff-sacks they came in and they fit very easily into the Everest bag in the previous post.  We headed out to do our max testing at a target temperature of Zero degrees.  We climbed into the bags at 9:00 PM and we both had cold feet from a cooler campfire that night. I was worried that I would be in trouble as the night went on but within 45 minutes the bag had my feet very comfortable. The bag is wide enough that you can have several stuff- sacks of boots, clothing, and outerwear in the bag with you. This worked out great because the next morning we were able to climb into warm, dry, day gear.  The only problem we had with the bags is during the middle of the night, we pulled our legs up and curled into a ball but quickly realized once a bag of this size cools down, putting your legs back to the bottom of the bag is not enough warmth to heat back up a frozen bag.  Due to using the bags without the full system, that problem was to be expected as we pushed the bag to it’s limit; therefore, we don’t fault the bag.  It is a simple bag to clean- just throw into a front loading washer and dry on low. (Gear Mom will be thankful for that one!). We actually slept until 7:30 AM and woke up chilled because the wind was pulling the heat out of the bag faster then we could replace it. We are okay with that though since that was to be expected in the environment in which we were testing. The bags handled the moisture in the tent and from our breathing very well; we did not wake up with damp bags.
